Rugmaking?
Rugmaking. I started working within this textile-based medium as I wanted to incorporate an analog process into my creative process. I have always loved working with wool through knitting and crocheting, so after discovering this discipline I was sold - I would describe tufting as drawing with wool, the perfect textile progression for an illustrator.
Earlier in 2022 I showcased a tufted exhibition called ‘Shared histories, celebrating Scottish traditional industries through a crafted medium, often associated with ‘Womens Work’. Throughout this exhibition I also held a workshop teaching people how to punch needle by hand - finishing up with a handmade coaster size design.

Where to find Sophy Louise Rugs?
Barras Market
The market is the first port of call to buy any new editions of rugs, as I make them from my open studio on Moncur Street. If you’re visiting the market feel free to pop by for a chat, I can tell you a lot about the process while I work.
Online Shop
All rugs available from the exhibition are listed on my online shop, with new drops being released here before any other stockists.
Commissions
Have an idea for a rug or household item in mind? Get in touch with me via social media or contact info below and we can chat about making your idea a reality. At the moment I can create wall hangings as small as 20x20cm to large scale rugs at 1.8x.1.8m.

Process.
Rugmaking is a really cool process to see in person, if you’re not out and about in Glasgow here’s some examples of tufting in action. These were filmed during the making of ‘shared histories’, Alchemy Experiment, 2022.
